Introduction

The most significant challenge of our age is creating and maintaining a solid basis for sustainable development. Sustainability is an issue affecting every segment of our lives. Given the growing population and economies the only way forward is technological development resulting in more efficient use of resources and less pollution.

Technological development requires enhanced cooperation at international level. Expansion of foreign markets and investments means sharing of knowledge and information, as well. This kind of cooperation between governments and companies multiply the potential of the individual nations.
The economic growth and technological development we witness all over the world is a great opportunity and a challenge at the same time. In this context environmental issues need to be addressed more than ever as that is duly reflected in the ambitious development programs of a growing number of countries. Hungary is willing to contribute to the success of these programs by offering its products, services and expertise in the environmental sector.

The Ministry of Environment and Water of Hungary launched a comprehensive environmental foreign trade program at the beginning of 2007. The KEXPORT program encourages professional associations and companies to strengthen their economic cooperation through external trade activities and investments with focus on innovation, R&D and technology transfer projects.

Expected results of the KEXPORT program:

- expanding environmental and water industry through new markets
- improving international competitiveness
- developing innovation capacity
- improving foreign trade balance

The Ministry of Environment and Water, the Hungarian Investment and Trade Development Agency, the Association of Environmental Enterprises as well as the National Office for Research and Technology established a common platform that serves the interested partners by providing services, relevant information and promoting international trade relations in the environmental sector.
